Planning for Safety

SAfety Planning Tips

Trusted Contacts

  • Identify friends, family, or a local shelter you can turn to for immediate assistance. Share your safety plan and code word with them, so they know when you're in danger and can help you when needed.
  • Teach your children a safety plan, including calling the police or family and friends if they are taken and where to go during an emergency.
  • Talk to your schools and childcare provider about who has permission to pick up the children and develop other special provisions to protect the children.

Keep Documents Secure

  • Make copies of essential documents such as identification, financial records, and restraining orders. Keep them in a safe, hidden location, or store digital copies in a secure, password-protected folder.
  • Keep a list of addresses and phone numbers where you can go in crisis and keep them in a safe place.

Internet Safety

  • Be cautious when using technology. Change passwords, enable privacy settings, and clear your browsing history to reduce the risk of your abuser tracking your online activities.
  • It might be safer to use a computer in a public library, at a trusted friend’s house, or an Internet Café.
